# Skills

> Attach skills to an agent, edit Glood's skills, and write your own

A skill is a written procedure an agent reads when it applies: how your returns
work, what to do with a fraud assessment, how to trace a drop in conversion. An
agent looks over its attached skills by their **Use when** lines, and reads a
skill's full body only when that line matches what it is doing.

> [!NOTE]
>
> These are skills for the agents in your dashboard. The two skills that teach an
> AI assistant to use Glood are different; see [Install the skills](https://docs.glood.ai/platform/skills.md).

Open **Agents → Skills** for the library. Seeing it needs `skill:read`; creating
and editing skills needs `skill:write`.

## The library

Each skill shows where it comes from, and how many agents use it. Filter with
**Where skills come from**, or search.

| Source | What it is |
| - | - |
| **Glood** | A skill Glood ships. It stays current: when Glood improves it, your agents get the new version |
| **Customised** | Your organization's own copy of a Glood skill. Glood's updates no longer reach it |
| **Custom** | A skill your organization wrote |

Glood's skills are listed, word for word, in the [Skills library](https://docs.glood.ai/platform/skills-library/index.md).

## Attach a skill to an agent

Attaching needs `skill:attach`.

**1. Open the agent's skills**

On the agent, **Configuration → Skills**.

**2. Attach skill**

Tick one or more skills, then **Attach**. The agent starts reading them on
its next run.

Each attached skill shows the store it is limited to, or **All stores**, and
**Off here** where it has been switched off on a store. **Detach** stops the
agent loading it from its next run; the skill stays in the library.

Some Glood skills are given to every agent when it is created, and marked **Every
agent** in the create wizard. You can still detach one from an agent that does
not need it.

## Write your own skill

Choose **New skill**.

| Field | What to put in it |
| - | - |
| **Title** | A name for the library, for example *Our returns rules* |
| **Slug** | The skill's address: lowercase letters, digits and hyphens. It is fixed once created, and it is what you name in an agent's instructions |
| **Use when** | When an agent should reach for it, in one line of up to 500 characters |
| **Body** | What the agent should know, step by step, in Markdown, up to 32 KB |

Then **Create skill**, and [attach it](#attach-a-skill-to-an-agent) to the
agents that need it.

> [!TIP]
>
> **Use when** is the only thing an agent reads before deciding to open a skill,
> so write it as a trigger, not a description. *"use when a customer asks to
> return or exchange an order"* gets read at the right moment; *"this skill covers
> returns"* does not.

Write the body as instructions to follow, not background reading. Name the tools
the agent should call by their exact names; see [Agent tools](https://docs.glood.ai/platform/agent-tools.md).

The body editor opens on **Markdown**, the exact text that is saved. **Rich**
shows it formatted, with a toolbar. The counter under it shows the size against
the 32 KB limit.

## Edit a Glood skill

Open the skill and edit it. Glood's skills are copy-on-write: your first save
makes your organization's own copy, marked **Customised**, and every agent that
uses the skill switches to your copy on its next run. Nothing needs attaching
again.

From then on your copy is yours. **Glood's later updates to that skill do not
reach it**, and do not overwrite it.

## Reset or restore a skill

On a customised skill, the actions menu (**...**) offers **Reset to Glood
version**. It archives your copy, and Glood's current version loads again for
every agent that uses the skill. Your edits stay in the history.

Prefer to keep your copy but start its text over? Paste Glood's text back in from
the [Skills library](https://docs.glood.ai/platform/skills-library/index.md#restore-a-default-skill).

## Archive a custom skill

**Archive skill**, in the actions menu, takes it away from every agent that
loads it. It stays in the history and cannot be attached again.
